Breath Test – Preparation Instructions

Important: If you do not follow the preparation instructions or dietary recommendations, the test will not be performed.

Preparation

Discontinue 4 weeks before the test:

  • Antibiotics
  • Bismuth-containing medications

Discontinue 2 weeks before the test:

  • Probiotics (e.g., Linex)
  • Laxatives (e.g., Guttalax)
  • Gastric acid-suppressing medications (e.g., Omeprazole)

Do not undergo the following procedures:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Gastrointestinal examinations using barium contrast
  • Enema

Important: If you have diarrhea, the test will be postponed.


Diet (2–3 Days Before the Test)

✔ Allowed foods:

  • White bread
  • Rice
  • Potatoes
  • Boiled chicken
  • Eggs
  • Boiled fish
  • Unsweetened coffee or tea
  • Water

❌ Avoid:

  • Beans
  • Pasta
  • Oats
  • Barley
  • Whole-grain bread
  • Dried fruit
  • Berries
  • Raw or fried vegetables

Diet (The Day Before the Test)

✔ Allowed foods:

  • Boiled rice
  • Boiled chicken or fish
  • Unsweetened coffee or tea
  • Water

12 Hours Before the Test

  • ❌ Do not eat any food.
  • ✔ You may drink water only.
  • If you take medications for chronic conditions, you may continue taking them with water.
  • If you have diabetes, consult your endocrinologist in advance regarding adjustment of your insulin or oral diabetes medication.

On the Day of the Test

  • ❌ Do not eat or drink anything.
  • ✔ You may brush your teeth without using mouthwash.

Do not use:

  • Chewing gum
  • Tobacco products
  • Lozenges or hard candies

Additional Instructions

  • ❌ Do not sleep during the hour before the test.
  • ❌ Avoid physical exercise before the test.
  • ❌ Eating or drinking during the test is strictly prohibited.

Test duration: 30 minutes to 3 hours

Minimum interval between breath tests: 2 days
